Values & Team Principles

Six foundational principles that guide how high-performance teams work together, build trust, and deliver exceptional results.

These six principles form the foundation of how I build and lead teams. They’re not just words on a wall—they’re operating principles that guide daily decisions and interactions.

Why These Principles Matter

Over two decades of building technology organizations, I’ve learned that culture isn’t defined by what you say, but by what you tolerate. These principles establish clear expectations for how team members work together and hold each other accountable.

The best teams I’ve led share a common thread: they internalize these values so deeply that they become reflexive. When communication is direct, when urgency is the norm, when the customer is genuinely at the center—excellence follows naturally.

Living the Principles

Each principle reinforces the others. Direct communication enables urgency. Integrity builds the trust that makes celebration meaningful. Setting a high bar motivates continuous improvement. And when the customer is delighted, the whole team shares in that success.

The goal isn’t perfection—it’s progress. Teams that embrace these principles create environments where people do their best work, where problems get solved quickly, and where success compounds over time.

The Principles

Principle 1

Communicate Directly Without Hesitation

Say what needs to be said, to the person who needs to hear it, when they need to hear it. Direct communication builds trust and prevents small issues from becoming big problems.

Principle 2

Act with Integrity, Respect, and Consideration

Do the right thing even when no one is watching. Treat colleagues, partners, and customers with genuine respect. Consider the impact of your actions on others.

Principle 3

Set a High Bar & Continuously Improve

Excellence is not a destination but a direction. Establish high standards and continuously push to exceed them. Never settle for 'good enough' when great is achievable.

Principle 4

Proceed with Urgency

Time is our most precious resource. Move quickly, make decisions, and bias toward action. Urgency creates focus and separates high-performers from the rest.

Principle 5

Delight the Customer

Go beyond meeting expectations to create genuine satisfaction. Understand customer needs deeply and deliver solutions that exceed what they imagined possible.

Principle 6

Celebrate Successes as a Team

Recognition fuels motivation. Take time to acknowledge wins, both big and small. Success is always a team effort and should be celebrated collectively.
