About

I’m Joe Croney, CTO of Arc XP at The Washington Post, where I lead the B2B SaaS platform that powers hundreds of global media organizations. My role is building the operating systems that run modern journalism—from the BBC to CNN to Reuters.

My path here was unconventional: Computer Science at Bucknell, early days at Microsoft during the .NET revolution, an MBA from Wharton, founding my own GPS startup for cruise ships, then diving deep into media technology at Associated Press before joining The Post.

I write about the intersection of technology, media, and audience behavior because I’ve seen this industry from every angle—as a builder, a business leader, and sometimes as a loving critic.

When I’m not redesigning media infrastructure, you’ll find me speaking at conferences about AI, audience evolution, and why journalism still matters—if we can get it to the right people in the right forms.

Beyond the boardrooms and product roadmaps, I’m an explorer in every sense. You might find me hiking to Park City’s peaks to ski the most challenging backcountry terrain, or remember the six months my wife Laura and I sailed the entire Caribbean chain with our three kids aboard—homeschooling by day, navigating by stars at night. As a pilot, I’ve learned that complex systems require both careful planning and quick decision-making. As an avid golfer, I’ve accepted that perfection is impossible but improvement is endless.

But my most important roles are as a father to three amazing children who keep me grounded and curious, and as a husband to Laura, my college sweetheart who’s been my co-adventurer through every startup, career pivot, and ocean crossing for over two decades.
